Some practical advice for tomorrow

Dear Graduating Seniors:

You made it. Tomorrow is the big day. I am proud of you and all that you have accomplished, and I want to leave you with some very practical advice for tomorrow (and some of it, I think, can be applied to your lives beyond Barnard!).

1) For University Commencement, WEAR SUNSCREEN. It will be hot tomorrow, and you will be sitting in the blazing sun for a couple of hours.

2) For the receptions happening between University and Barnard Commencements: FIND THE MAP when you enter campus. The MAP will have the locations of the various department receptions. Find your department, take your family and/or friends, and say hello to your devoted teachers and mentors.

3) For Barnard Commencement: You will want to look fancy and everything, but be aware that WEARING HEELS MIGHT NOT ALWAYS BE THE BEST IDEA. The stairs leading up to the stage and down from the stage are rickety little temporary steps, and one false move with a spiky heel could mean a sprained ankle. I recommend flats or wedges, or walking really, really carefully.

As you can see, this could be some good advice for your life beyond college as well: remember to wear sunscreen, heels may not always be a good idea (and flats are cute!), and remember to always read the map, whether it be a real map, a Google map, Waze, or the important internal map inside your heart and soul that keeps you on your path to success.

With best wishes,
Dean Friedman
