Use the Columbia University Projected Final Exam Schedule to plan ahead for your last finals week

Source: Mortarboard 1943, Barnard Digital Collections

Planning ahead for the end of your last semester?  The Columbia University Projected Final Exam Schedule is here to help. Days and times are accurate; the only difference between the "projected" exam schedule and the full schedule is the latter will also have locations.

The detailed, class-by-class list for both Columbia and Barnard classes should become available online after midterms

Note the following instructions regarding exam conflicts or exam hardship for Barnard students:

Students will occasionally have two exams scheduled for the same time. If you have exam conflict (two exams at the same time) or exam hardship (defined as three exams within a 24-hour period or four exams within a 48-hour period), please fill out this form.

Examinations are not rescheduled to accommodate travel plans.

Missed deadline to go below 12 credits in last semester? There's a petition for that

Did you mean to request permission to go below 12 credits in your final semester by the Feb 25 drop deadline and/or did something prevent you from making this request in time?

You can still make this request up to the March 27 W deadline, but you must now do it via petition.  Meet with your class dean to discuss, but in broad strokes you will need to:

1. Download your current unofficial transcript & degree audit from Student Planning.

2. Go to Slate to find the form to petition the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing for an exception to policy

3.  Select "Other" from the drop-down menu for petition type

4. Under "Describe your petition/special case:" explain that you are requesting late permission for below 12 credits in your final semester, being sure to specify:

  • how many credits you have completed,
  • how many semesters you have completed,
  • if you are a transfer student or if you entered as a first year,
  • how many credits you are currently taking,
  • what course(s) you would like the registrar to withdraw you from if approved
  • how many credits you will have if approved --> minimum of 9 credits
  • NOTE: you must submit an additional petition to if you would like this to be considered as a late-drop request. Please mention in both petitions that you are doing this

5.  Under "Explain the justification for your petition:" share everything you think is relevant about what prevented you from making this request on time, why you are making it now, why you believe it should be approved, etc. If you have more than 200 words to say about this, you may write "please see attached" and attach a screenshot

6. Be sure to upload BOTH an unofficial transcript AND all pages of your degree audit so that your request can be evaluated.

What to do if you wanted to drop a class but missed the deadline

The deadline to drop a class was February 25.  Just realizing now that you meant to drop something or that it might be a good idea to drop something?

Don't panic!

Class feeling difficult?
Leaving the class may not be necessary -  consider office hours, help rooms, or requesting a tutor through our free Peer-to-Peer Learning program.  Writing Fellows, Speaking Fellows, and Personal Librarians are also here to help!

If worrying about the grade is crowding out your ability to focus on learning and you don't need the class for a major or minor, you may also consider taking it Pass/D/Fail.
P/D/F deadline: March 27, 9:30pm (on SSOL, does not require permission; if unavailable on SSOL there is a Slate Form) Note that graduating seniors cannot uncover grades of P elected in the final semester.

Really need to get out of a class?
It is not too late to withdraw from a class with a W, as long as you will still be in 12 credits total, and still be on track to graduate on your planned schedule.  Remember that a W is a non-punitive grade that simply indicates that you followed proper procedure to leave a class in progress.
Withdraw-with-a-W deadline: March 27, 9:30pm (Slate form and adviser approval needed)

SENIOR FAQ: How to download a pdf of your degree audit

Q: I'm filling out a form that asks for a PDF of my degree audit. How do I get one?

A: By following these steps:

1. Navigate to your degree audit in Student Planning:

2. Click the "Print" icon in the upper right, just above the orange warning text:

3. In the Print dialogue window, select "Destination: Adobe PDF" or "Print to PDF" depending on your operating system, being sure to select "color" if that is an option.

4. Depending on how your computer is configured, this will open a new doc in Adobe or ask you where you want to save your new PDF.  If your browser asks how you would like to open the file, do NOT select "Open in browser."  Instead select "open in Adobe Acrobat" or whatever PDF-viewing software you have (e.g. Preview on a Mac)

5. Give it a recognizable name and note where you are saving it, so you can find it and upload it to your Slate form.

It’s your last semester of college. That’s crazy! We hope that you are being kind to yourself in this wild time and soak up all that Barnard has to offer. If you want to join another extracurricular and/or make some more awesome friends, we here at Lift Up Barnard wanted to remind you that we as a group are here for you!

In case you don’t know who we are, or would like a little refresher, we’re a student-led group dedicated to friendship and community at Barnard. Every week, we switch between having discussions about things like FOMO, stress, friend groups, and more, and having fun activities like origami sessions, movie/game nights, and other things like that. A few times a semester, we also take some off-campus trips to explore NYC together! In the past, we’ve gone to Hex & Co, Levain Bakery, a picnic in Central Park, and the Union Square Holiday Market.

It’s never too late to join our group, as we pride ourselves in being a welcoming space for all Barnard students, no matter what stage you’re at in your college journey. We meet every Wednesday at 7PM in 227 Milbank

Reach out to us via email at liftupbarnard@gmail.com or on Instagram @liftupbarnard and join our mailing list here: https://forms.gle/gccBFBzHhmWbUzcz8

Senior-Year FACT OR FICTION: Can't change your major in your final semester?

Welcome to a new series, Senior-Year FACT OR FICTION, wherein we address persistent rumors about credits, graduation, rules, exceptions, etc. so that you can distinguish Senior FACT from Senior FICTION.

Heard a rumor and want to know if it's true?  Submit requests for this series to SeniorClassDean@barnard.edu

FACT OR FICTION:
Is it true that graduating seniors cannot change their major during their last semester?

YES; this is FACT. In general, graduating seniors cannot change their majors in their final semester.

There are just a few possible exceptions:
  • You may change from a double major to a single major if you will be unable to complete one of the two majors.
  • You may change your concentration within a major (e.g. from a general biology major to Cellular Molecular Biology).
  • If you believe you have an extremely good reason or extenuating circumstance that warrants changing your major in your final semester, you may petition the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing. Such petitions may or may not be successful. Meet with your class dean to discuss.
  • Related: You may add a minor in your final semester if you have already completed or are in the process of completing all the minor requirements this semester. If you are working on an undeclared minor, please file the minor declaration ASAP. Deadline to declare a minor is March 1.
