Lucyle Hook Travel grant for seniors seeking $$ for thesis-related travel -- DEADLINE = NOV. 1

Lucyle Hook Travel Grants

Application Deadline: November 1, 2023

Lucyle Hook Travel Grants are available to seniors to support thesis research that requires travel, often done during winter break. To apply, you must submit a proposal, budget, and a letter of support from a Barnard or Columbia faculty member by November 1, 2023. You may email attachments to blevy@barnard.edu or deliver hard copies to the Deans Office for Advising and Support, Milbank  105. Below are guidelines:

1. Brief Abstract (75 -100 words): Provide an overview of your thesis topic.

2. Detailed Proposal (maximum three pages, double-spaced, one-inch margins): Provide details about the issues you intend to investigate. You are expected to address the following points.

a. Where do you intend to go?

b. What will you do there and how long will you need to stay?

c. Have you made contact with any on-site individuals or institutions whose cooperation will be critical to your research? If yes, provide details.

d. How has your research grown out of your academic pursuits?

e. How will your proposed work enrich your thesis?

3. Letter of Recommendation: The faculty letter of support should be written by a person familiar with your project – the person supervising your thesis, for example – and should address both the  importance of this research to your thesis and your qualifications for conducting this research.

4. Proposed Budget: Provide details regarding expenses including transportation, daily living costs such as lodging and food, and other fees or costs associated with your project. Past grants have generally been between $100 - $500. A chart form is best and should be included as one of the maximum three pages.

If your project involves human subjects, please go to https://barnard.edu/provost/research/regulatory-agencies, click on the “Student as PI Worksheet” link, and submit the completed form with your proposal.

Proposals will be reviewed and assessed by the Faculty Committee on Honors at their November 2023 meeting. Bear in mind that although some members of the Committee may be experts in your field, most will not be; it will be wise to tailor your proposal accordingly. Please direct any questions to Dean Erica Siegel by email (esiegel@barnard.edu) or by making an appointment via her online calendar.

Funding opportunity: CJC for the Arts Grant -- Deadline November 17, 2023

The CJC for the Arts Grant funds expenses related to senior theses or other independent projects in film,  studio art, dance, theater, or related fields. To apply, you must submit the following by November 17, 2023.  Please email attachments to blevy@barnard.edu.

1. Detailed Proposal (maximum two pages, double-spaced, one-inch margins):

a. What exactly is the purpose of your proposed project? Describe central idea(s) or theme(s)

    and propose a working title.

b. How have you prepared and what are your qualifications? How does your proposed project build on your experience in your field and, if appropriate, related fields? Be specific: What coursework, course projects, and/or extracurricular experience has  prepared you for this project? Give a brief explanation of the project’s genesis. How  does the project grow out of what you’ve learned to this point?

c. Place your project in context: As appropriate, explain briefly how your project is related  to current

thinking or practice in your field? How is your project influenced, or inspired, by certain ideas or

trends in your field? And/or how will the project respond to these ideas or trends? Provide the

Committee with some relevant intellectual context. Note: for visual arts students, consider the

    following quotations:

i. “Projects that are modeled after major movements in contemporary art will be  executed in the studio….” (from the catalogue description for AHIS BC3530, “Advanced Studio”).

ii. “Students are encouraged to incorporate what they learn in their lectures and seminars into their own body of work. Unlike in many visual arts programs, Barnard  studio arts courses and seminars emphasize the reinterpretation of artistic practice rather than reliance on ‘traditional knowledge’…” (from the department’s  website). How, then, will your work be modeled after—and/or be a reinterpretation  of –a major idea or ideas in contemporary art?

2. Letter of Recommendation: The faculty letter of support should be written by a person familiar with your project and should address both the importance of this project and your qualifications.

3. Proposed Budget: A one-page detailed budget, preferably in chart form. What materials will you need beyond those already available to students in your department? What, if any other expenditures, will you have? What is the minimum amount that will allow you to move forward with your project? Past grants have generally been in the $250 -$700 range.

Proposals will be reviewed and assessed by the Faculty Committee on Honors at the December 2023 meeting. Bear in mind that although some members of the Committee may be experts in your field, most  will not be; it will be wise to tailor your proposal accordingly. Grant recipients will be required to provide a  report (of up to three pages) describing how the funding contributed to their project or overall academic or  intellectual growth.  Please direct any questions to Dean Erica Siegel (esiegel@barnard.edu).

Senior Year FACT or FICTION: Limit to how many studio classes can count for credit?

FACT OR FICTION:
Is it true that there is a limit to how many "studio" credits [studio art, dance technique, acting, music lessons] you can earn credit for?

YES; this is FACT. Per the Barnard Catalogue:

No more than 18 points of studio, performing arts, or professional school courses may be credited toward the B.A. degree.

Of these:

  • A maximum of 4 arts studio courses may be credited.
  • A maximum of 6 courses in instrumental instruction may be credited
    • except for Music majors and minors, who may receive credit for 8, including piano instruction
  • A maximum of 6 studio courses in Theatre may be credited
    • except for Theatre majors who may receive credit for 24 points of studio
  • A maximum of twelve courses (12 credits) in dance technique may be credited
    • except for Dance majors who may receive credit for 24 points of dance.
    • If a student is applying 1 or 2 credits of dance technique classes towards the P.E. requirement, they can take a maximum of 12 credits in dance technique in addition to the credits used for P.E.
  • A maximum of 2 professional school courses (e.g. business school, journalism school, etc.) may be credited.

Exceptions to this rule are allowed only for courses in the major field or for courses taken in fulfillment of requirements for double and joint degree programs with professional schools of the University. A maximum of 24 points may be credited for studio or performance courses in the major field. A minimum of 90 points of traditional liberal arts courses is required for the student who majors in such a field; for all other majors, a minimum of 102 points of such courses is required.

How to drop a class by the Oct 10 deadline

Friday, 9/15/2023 was the deadline to add a class, but you can still drop up to the October 10 deadline (after the drop deadline, you can withdraw with a W on or before November 16)

Follow the easy online steps below to drop a class on or before the deadline.

1. Contact your adviser to discuss and obtain their approval

Best practice is to have an advising conversation where you discuss options and any possible implications of this drop on your full-time status or your graduation progress, but depending on how much you and your adviser have already discussed things, they may agree to review and approve your form without such a meeting

2. Submit the online Drop Request Form

You will only be able to drop online if your adviser has granted this permission. Be sure that you are not attempting to drop below 12 credits unless approved via CARDS or as a final-semester senior  -- the system will not allow drop below 12 credits without additional approval.

3. As soon as your adviser grants permission, you will receive an email informing you that you have permission to drop the class(es) discussed.

While this adviser permission is for the specific class you request, functionally it reopens your ability to drop in general, so be sure to drop the right class and nothing else.

4. You will have two days to drop the class online via Student Planning.*

If you don't drop within the 2-day window, you will need to request permission again.

*Note that you must drop on or before the drop deadline if you want the class removed from your transcript.

2023 Convocation will be held on Monday, September 18, at 4:30 p.m. and all students are encouraged to attend. This ceremony is one of Barnard’s most enduring traditions, as it marks the beginning of the academic year, celebrating all new and returning students. All members of the Barnard community are invited.

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Herminia Palacio, Barnard alumna from the class of 1983, a physician who has led several major public health initiatives both in city government and in the nonprofit sector.

DEADLINE REMINDER: Registration, Adviser Approval, Enrollment Confirmation deadline FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 15

Welcome back!

Don't forget:

1.  Your Fall 2023 Course Plan in Student Planning must show, in green (i.e. fully registered)all courses that you are taking this semester, including any PE, Dance technique, Varsity sport, or rehearsal/performance course for which you will earn credit this semester.

2.  Your adviser must approve your course schedule by clicking "Review Complete" in Student Planning.  Ideally, they will do this during an advising meeting with you.  If there are extenuating circumstances making it impossible for you and your adviser to meet until next week, your adviser may click Review Complete upon confirming an appointment day/time with you for next week.  Need advice/approval and can't reach your adviser?  Visit us in the Dean of Studies office!

Don't forget to drop any classes or waitlists that you no longer need.

If you are unable to add a course that you know that you're in, or if you are unable to drop a course or leave a waitlist for something you're not taking, please visit or contact the Registrar's officeregistrar@barnard.edu).

It is possible that a credit for a P.E. course, Dance technique course, or Varsity sport may appear after the registration deadline (if the course is eligible for credit for the P.E. requirement). If this does not happen automatically, you may need to fill out a form.

Friday, Sept 15 is the last day you may officially add a course
to your schedule. If you need to add a course to your schedule after that date, you will need to petition the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing for permission to do so (contact your class dean if you need info about this), and a late fee may be charged.

You may still drop courses until the Drop Deadline (see Academic Calendar for drop deadlines.  To drop a course after Sept 15, you will need to meet with your adviser for approval, so your adviser can submit their approval of your drop request no later that 4:30 p.m. on the drop deadline. Find this and all other deadlines on the Academic Calendar and consider adding the Academic Calendar to your gBear calendar.

Reminder that there is no separate Enrollment Confirmation process any more. You confirm your enrollment by (1) registering for classes and (2) paying your bill by the Sept 15 deadline. See this blog post for how to tell what kind of hold you may have, and contact the Bursar if you need to discuss your bill.

**Note about Courseworks/Canvas**
Until the registration deadline, your CourseworksCanvas page may not look exactly like your Student Planning page because it takes some time for an added class on myBarnard to appear on Courseworks, and it takes some extra time for a dropped class to disappear. Courseworks will catch up eventually. The most important thing is to make sure that your enrollments are accurate on your Student Planning Fall 2023 page.

Senior Year FACT or FICTION: possible to take fewer than 12 credits in your last semester????

FACT OR FICTION:
Is it true that you can take fewer that 12 credits in your last semester?

YES; this is FACT, BUT ONLY IN VERY SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES and by following proper procedure

As stated in the Barnard College Catalogue:

"As of Spring 2022, in their final semester of enrollment, graduating seniors who need fewer than twelve credits to complete their degree – and who have already completed at least four full-time semesters in academic residence – may be approved to take a minimum of nine credit hours. Because Barnard students are charged a flat rate of tuition per semester, reducing one’s course load to nine credits will not change the tuition owed in the student’s last semester."

Submit this form by the drop deadline to request approval **Note that this request can only be made at the start of your final semester, for that semester**: https://slate.barnard.edu/register/final_semester_request

International students must consult with International Student Services in advance to determine eligibility.  Students who meet this criteria and are approved to be enrolled in nine credits are still eligible to live in Barnard’s residence halls.

If any student who is not an eligible senior needs to register for fewer than twelve credits for disability-related reasons, they may reach out to CARDS to discuss the reduced course load process at cards@barnard.edu.

Senior FAQ: Do I have to take 12 credits if this is my last semester and I don't need that many credits?

Short answer: POSSIBLY NOT

Longer answer: if you can complete all your major and General Education requirements, as well as 122 credits (121 for transfers) with fewer than 12 credits this semester, and do not have any outstanding incomplete coursework from the past, you may request permission to take a minimum of 9 credits in your final semester.

To request permission for this option please submit this form beginning the first day of classes, and before the drop deadline: https://slate.barnard.edu/register/final_semester_request

Per the Barnard Catalogue (emphasis added):

As of Spring 2022, in their final semester of enrollment, graduating seniors who need fewer than twelve credits to complete their degree – and who have already completed at least four full-time semesters in academic residence – may be approved to take a minimum of nine credit hours. Because Barnard students are charged a flat rate of tuition per semester, reducing one’s course load to nine credits will not change the tuition owed in the student’s last semester.

FAQ:

What about the Dean's List? Don't I need to be in 12 letter-graded credits to be considered for that?

Final-semester students who are approved for fewer than 12 credits are eligible for the dean's list if they complete at least 9 credits with the requisite GPA.
