DEADLINE ALERT: incomplete work from fall 2023 due MONDAY, April 15

If you took an Incomplete in any of your Fall 2023 classes, be sure to turn in all remaining written work to both the instructor and registrar@barnard.edu (so that it can be time-stamped as on time) no later than Monday, April 15, 2024.

Once the instructor submits the new final grade, it will completely replace the temporarly placeholder "I" grade, and your transcript will show no evidence of the former incomplete.

In between you submitting the work and the instructor entering the updated grade, you may see your grade temporarily changed to "WS" -- do not panic if you see this! It stands for "Work Submitted" and means you have done everything correctly and by the appropriate deadline.

If work is not submitted by the deadline, the instructor will be directed to enter the contingency grade, i.e. a final grade factoring in a zero for any missing work. The contingency grade will be preceded by an asterisk on the transcript (e.g. *B, *C-, *F).

If you are experiencing extenuating circumstances and would like to discuss the possibility of petitioning to extend an incomplete, please contact your class dean.

Reminder that, as a Barnard student, you get to attend -- and must RSVP and request guest tickets for -- two Commencements: University Commencement on Columbia's campus the morning of May 15, and Barnard College Commencement at Radio City Music Hall on the afternoon of May 15.

You should by now have received the email below from commencement@barnard.edu advising you that registration/ticketing is now OPEN for University Commencement.  (Stay tuned for upcoming info about Barnard tickets/registration!)

LAST CALL: Task Force Focus Group Recruitment Letter

  Barnard College

Dear Students,

In an effort to improve trust on campus, the Barnard Task Force for Campus Climate and Expression – a group of students, faculty, staff, and trustees committed to bettering campus climate –  would like to provide a way to amplify student voices.  With this in mind, we invite you to take part in a 30-45-minute focus group that will help us provide President Rosenbury and other senior leaders with specific recommendations on topics addressing the residential halls, including engagement with peers in communal living spaces, the door decoration/adornment policy, and challenges and opportunities for community building in the future.

We recognize that many feel that free expression has been limited in the residence halls and there have been increased reports of antisemitism, Islamophobia, and racism. We know many students have not been feeling heard, and we are hoping to find a better path forward.

We value your voice in this work. Your participation will be confidential and your name will not be shared beyond the DEI staff (Joanne Delgadillo, Chief of Staff and Arun Bryson, Administrative Manager). Once in the focus group you will be given a code to replace your name. If you have questions please reach out to dei@barnard.edu.

If you would like to sign up, please sign up here. The DEI manager will be in contact with you for scheduling.

Sincerely,

The Campus Climate and Expression Task Force

Important update on NEW p/d/f and W deadlines

You should by now have received this email from Dean Tedder & Registrar Simmons:

Barnard College

Dear Students,

We are writing to update you on two policy changes for the spring semester 2024 that concern the deadlines for Pass/D/Fail and Withdrawal.

For spring semester 2024, the deadline for electing Pass/D/Fail for courses will be extended to the last day of the semester, April 29, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. EDT.

For spring semester 2024, the deadline for withdrawing from a course or courses will be extended to April 22, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. Please allow time in advance of this deadline to seek adviser approval.

The changes have been made to allow students additional time to make their decisions for the spring semester 2024. In the next academic year, Barnard will take under consideration the decision to make the same changes but on a permanent basis.

Please note that these deadlines fall during the week of Passover. We encourage students to make decisions about withdrawals or electing P/D/F in advance of the holiday whenever possible; however, if this is not possible, please contact your dean to make this request as soon as you are able to resume work activities after the holiday.

Please note that all other policies and deadlines remain in effect in spring 2024.

Students may elect the Pass/D/Fail option for one course per semester.
Courses for the majors or minors are not eligible for Pass/D/Fail.
Students may not withdraw from a course if it brings them below 12 credits unless previously approved for a reduced courseload.

Please consult this page of the website for all details on Pass/D/Fail.

We wish you well as we approach the final weeks of the spring semester.

Sincerely,

Holly Tedder

Dean for Academic Planning and Class Advising

How do I withdraw from a class by the **NEW** April 22, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. deadline

The **NEW** deadline to withdraw from a spring 2024 class is  April 22, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.

Note that this is NOT the same date as the p/d/f deadline.

Withdrawn classes will not affect your GPA and you will not earn credit for them, but they will remain on your transcript, and a W will be entered place of the final grade.

Note: You may not withdraw from a class if doing so would leave you with fewer than 12 credits.

To withdraw from a class, use this online form , following these steps:

1. Consult with your adviser.

2. Get an email from your adviser confirming they approve you to withdraw from this specific class.

3. Download that email as a PDF or save a screenshot of it.

4. Complete and submit the online W form on or before the W deadline, uploading your adviser’s confirmation email when prompted to do so.

5. You will receive an email confirmation once your W request is processed, ordinarily within two business days.

Note that the W may not appear on your record until the end of the semester when final grades are entered.

NEW DEADLINE ALERT: April 29, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. EDT is now the deadline to P/D/F a Spring 2024 course

If you are considering electing the p/d/f option for a spring 2024 course, the **new** deadline to elect the p/d/f option is April 29, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. EDT (note that, unlike in past semesters, this is NOT the same date as the W deadline)

**Special note for May grads -- you cannot uncover grades of P from a course taken during  your last semester.

Also, reminder that courses taken p/d/f this year are subject to the current rules.  Read all about p/d/f rules on the Registrar's website:

To elect the P/D/F Grading option:

NEW process as of fall 2023:

Barnard students will use SSOL to elect P/D/F grading

-Click here to elect a Fall 2023 course for P/D/F grading(Use a browser other than Safari).

-Click on P/D/F grading then Grading Option Change Request.

This form can be used to elect Pass/D/Fail for a course where that option is not available in SSOL.

To undo/ revoke your p/d/f election  - or switch the election to a different class (this must be done prior to the P/D/F grading deadline):

-Go to ssol.columbia.edu and go to Pass/D/Fail Uncover.

FAQ: I tried to elect the p/d/f option in SSOL but there's a note saying P/D/F is unavailable? Does this mean I can't p/d/f this class????

A: No! If P/D/F is unavailable in SSOL, you can still p/d/f your course -- you just need to use this Slate form

Some classes may not have p/d/f available in SSOL, but this does NOT mean you can't take the class p/d/f -- the only reason you would not be allowed to take something p/d/f would be if you need it for a major or minor requirement.

How to add an upcoming term in Student Planning so you can plan & register in the next registration/add/drop period

If you don't see Fall 2023 as an option when you want to begin planning your courses for next semester on Student Planning, you’ll need to add a new term to your Student Planning account.

*NEW* Vergil feature to search for classes with open seats

The tool has similar search criteria as Student Planning, including the ability to look for classes that satisfy Barnard General Education (Foundations) requirements, classes with a particular number of credits, etc.

NOTE ON FOUNDATIONS REQS: for Barnard requirements, be sure to cross reference anything found here with the Slate listing of courses approved for Foundations requirements.

It also has the option to “Only show classes with open seats” in the search results.

Not graduating this May? Don't forget to meet with your adviser and register for classes April 15-10

Your assigned registration time will appear closer to registration week if it’s not there yet.
